Give your garden the wow factor by replacing your old and worn grassy area with a lush and cost-effective artificial lawn that will last for years.
An increasing number of people are choosing artificial options to revamp their gardens because of how natural they look and the low maintenance needed to take care of them.
These hard-wearing yarns can bring a fresh and realistic look to a range of outdoor areas, from small rooftop spaces to large back gardens and commercial projects, such as pubs and restaurants, or just as a reliable all-rounder.
But which one to pick? With so many options on the market, it can be difficult to decide what to invest in, especially if you are planning to lay the grass yourself.
To ensure you make the right choice, follow PermaGroup’s handy advice, brought to you by our artificial lawn division, PermaLawn…
How to choose an artificial lawn
You might want to take the strain out of your lawn-mowing chore, impress your friends with a stunning lawn that looks great all year round or simply create a family and pet-friendly space. Follow our six steps to choose the best artificial grass.
Tip 1 – Start with a budget
Buying artificial grass is an investment that should last for years, so it’s important to get the quality right first time. There’s no point fixing your sights on one type if the figures don’t add up but artificial grass has come a long way in the last few decades and there is a range of solutions to suit your needs. PermaLawn’s prices range from £8.95 per m2 to £21.91 per m2.
Work out the different factors involved, such as the size of your garden, the style of grass you want, how you will use the space and the level of durability needed – and whether you want to fit it yourself or pay for installation.
Tip 2 – Measure the size of your project
It’s an easy calculation – simply times the length of your space by its width. So if your garden is 10m long and 10m wide, you’ll need to order 100 m2 of artificial grass. If your garden is an awkward shape or if you want to choose a non-square look, you should take the widest measurements. You can then ask your installer to cut the artificial grass to the exact size.
Tip 3 – Ask for a sample
There’s nothing better than seeing the grass up close to decide whether it will suit your space. Consider the colour, quality and length and how you will use it, whether for a garden, patio, terrace or a golf putting green.
Companies are happy to send out free samples to help you make a final decision and choose the right shade for you.
Tip 4 – Choose the right thickness and density
Are the grass blades the right depth for you? The pile height, or yarn length, used in your new artificial grass can vary depending on the intended use and position.
Go for a shorter grass, from 26mm, if you want a tidy look that is perfect for children and pets to run around on. While a longer grass – such as 38mm – may feel more luxurious underfoot, it may be more prone to flattening, depending on how you will use the lawn.
Grass with a higher density tends to be more resilient and is ideal for heavier usage, such as at schools and outdoor dining venues and with football-loving children or where heavy furniture will be placed – and it will also look more lush.
Tip 5 – Choose your colour
From bright and vivid greens to more subtle tones, consider how the colour will look depending on the size of the space and factors such as sunshine and shade – and also where you will be viewing it from.
Do your research by looking at other fitted grasses – do you want vertical lines in different colours or the same shade throughout? You want to have years of enjoying your chosen grass and for it to really showcase your garden.
Step 6 – Installing your artificial lawn
Use a step-by-step guide, like ours here, to fit your own lawn – it’s a very straightforward process. With just a few tools and a great preparation plan for smoothing the ground underneath, you’ll have a spruced-up lawn in no time. And you’ll have a sense of achievement as you admire the effect.
But don’t fear if you’re not a fan of DIY – there’s a large installer network that you can hire to do the job for you.
